clean up
Thanks for the offer Wallyboss. I plan on taking a walk out there either tomorrow or Wednesday to survey what's left and then see how much manpower to get it off. Will advise if help is needed...
Re the stove, I'm waiting to see if the owner will show up to claim it. If not I'm sure a home can be readily found for it...
Cheers

LOL banning ice fishing is NOT the answer. If we cannot be responsible with the amount of garbage left behind there should be regulatory laws put in place to accompany the ice shack registration, if you can't leave your spot clean, you don't deserve a spot on the ice. Plain and simple. They should make that part of the Ministry's job. Check out the spots after people have left.. of course I have never owned an ice shack and don't really know how that registration works, if they know where you are on the ice or not... Just something along those lines. There at least has to be an attempt to regulate it before banning it indefinitely. I just wish people could step up and take care of that themselves. Anything left on the ice should at least be a natural substance, if not... take it home, how hard is that? Bring a few empty coffee cans with sand or pebbles in them for cigarette butts... tough? No. Get one or two outdoor garbage cans with lids, secure them to your shack. That way they won't get stuck in the ice. Of all the money people put into making shacks and ice fishing gear/heaters etc. They can't get a few cans for their waste? There's no reason not to. $10-20.00 extra.. so what? It takes 2 minutes to throw all of that in your shack when you leave. When I go to a shack to fish all that should be left behind when you leave is your shack, just throw anything loose in it until you come back, that way it won't freeze into the ice, Come on people it's not that hard to clean up after yourselves. It's not 'YOUR' spot on the ice... It's everyone's ice, everywhere. Don't mess it up for the rest of us.

What ministry are you talking about Banannie?? I hope that you are not talking about MNR. When is the last time that you saw an MNR vehicle around. I have fished Petrie all Winter and I haven't seen a warden this year. They don't even have money for regulation checks I don't think that they will start checking for garbage. I agree with you that something needs to be done but hoping for the MNR to do something is wishfull thinking.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

I wasn't saying that the MNR will or can afford to put a regulation on it, and as I said in my post, I have no idea who does that... it was just an example of what to do. They should be able to link cleanup with some other law/regulation etc. It will make it cheaper/easier to enforce. It was just an idea/example of the direction that I believe would be the easiest way to go about regulating something that seems so difficult to put a leash on.[/i]

Trying to get the ministry of the enviroment to step in and enforce littering would be almost impossible.
Is littering a strong enough business case to change the laws and regulations surrounding permanment fishing shelters, that we at some time examine the idea of eliminating them all together?
Let's look at some trends that are happening regarding live bait. The artificial bait manufacturers are sucessfully lobbying the government to ban the use of live bait because they are producing bio degradable alternatives. I would almost bet that the use of live bait will eliminated within the next 5 years.
The safe alternative to the big ol' wood and steel shanty could easily be replaced with the portable units. Too bad they are not priced more affordably.
We only need to enforce the laws that we have in place, not write new ones that will also be ignored.

No ministry will want to get involved, that's the worst part of it.

Thanks everyone for some reasoning here, but I am that a few others are taking my ban ice fishing comment seriousy.
I fish soft water and for some 80-100 days a year and yes once in a while we'll lose a plastic bag or a hat ( even a rod and reel ) but I take out a lot more then I'm puting in.
Just think or what we can't see that's been put down the holes other then what's left on the ice.
Even wood is a pollutant man the water level will be higher from all that crap.
I wonder how many boat fishermen are pigs as we tend to see it more from shore and ice fishermen.

I think what Richard meant by wood being pollution is that all that PT wood or Pressure Treated is full of carsonegins that will leach out over time into the water. Other than that wood in no way is a pollutant...Maybe not natural to the river system but not pollution. Now as for the main point about the garbage...this is what we as humans do and have been doing for 1000's of years just on a larger and more toxic level. This is a law and is enforced by the OPP so that answers the question about who would be responsible. Now in reality you will have a hard time these days finding a police officer who cares what was left on the ice considering all the robberies, accidents etc going on daily. We as citizens can technically make an arrest but is it not much easier to just pick the darn wrapper up or the coke can and throw it in the garbage. One person picking up one piece of garbage is small but if everyone picked one piece up what would the world be like????
