"Ice" Perching w/Missing Boater Story (Rideau)

I went perching today in the Rideau River. I was there in the morning till about 2pm.

I caught over 45 perch in that time period. I tried some of the open water spots with current near a dam but no luck, water is simply too fast or something.

I know perch aren't exactly the holy grail of fishing but it was fun to feel that tug on my line again for the first time since last fall.

Also, I didn't know it at the time but I saw the search boats looking for the man who fell into the water after their boat capsized. I was sitting at the edge of a dock looking towards the Jock River Landing in the distance, and saw a bright orangey/red boat speeding around frantically in the extreme current. It's a really sad thing. People should not go boating in the Rideau or Jock at this time it's WAY too dangerous! Look at my pictures of the dam 1km above the Jock River Landing and you'll see why.

This one had some sort of cut and a very small black parasite on it's back near the fin, it wasn't black grub, it unlike the little dots on all the perch and way bigger.

This one was nice and fat, I guess he managed to eat VERY well all winter.

This is about 1km from the outflow of the Jock River where I saw a bright orange boat in the distance today which was the search party looking for the missing boaters. Definitely not a river you want to be boating in right now!

and yea it really is to bad about the missing guy
my question is how were you catching those fish theres ice all around you

Tom, your catching more fish than I have in two or three outings now. Nice to see you out doing your thing, won't be long now and you should be able to actually cast off that dock

FiH,

Congrats on the perch'n. From your pics it looks like the lock is still frozen. Once the lock itself is free of ice you'll find that the perch will school there and it's easy to sight fish them. The only problem is that you'll usually have one or two big smallies that move in as well and it can be a challenge to avoid them, though the perch usually quick to take your bait first.

you may not have been holding up a 10lb eye, but a fish is a fish. Good for you getting out and catching a few fish. Big or small, I like them all.

When we were in FL a couple of weeks ago, we only caught a smattering of smaller bass and panfish. But I know JUST WHAT YOU MEAN about how great it is to connect with a fish after a long winter of zippo.

Nice perching report.

Was just reading about the missing boater in the other thread, which is really a tragedy.

I was fishing off the end of a dock at a boat lock on the Rideau system. I was just throwing my jig and worm into the holes and cracks in the ice all around the area.

I have most success on the south end of the dock. The west side was also good. I caught 3-4 on the east side too.

And Tip Up, don't worry that I caught more fish than you have in a few outtings, I'm sure you'll be the king of Trout once again as usual this year

I doubt i'll catch one this year, no one I know wants to fish for them. my dad has given up on them largely,although I have a trailer in Deux Rivieres up north on the Ottawa, and I've hard it's not so bad up there on the Quebec side or even Ontario side in some of the rivers/creeks.

i'll trade you 1000 perch for 1 nice brookie

did you have any problems geetting you fish through the hole after you hooked them that would seem like a problem for me

hey buddy!!!

i know some great spots for you to check in deuxriviere. i go up to algonquin park every year in that area and gett lots of big brookies. i'll pm you couple lakes and streams. in peterborough right now, so it'll have to wait until sunday night mondayish...
