RJ, that pike was no accident.....i know you were targetting 40" pike with cranks and mono in 3' of water...i just know it!
Landshark, that fish looks mean....pure and simple....and it has to, feeding on walleye like it does....
I dont give pike the respect they deserve...probably cause the ones I catch are food for those two beasts.....
You know a fish is big when RJ is excited....and he was!

You indeed got lucky to land it with the 10 lb mono ... but it does sound from your blog that you realized what was on the line and knew that you needed a strategy to get it in the net and on board asap ... so some skill there too ...
I had a similar experience but not such a fortunate ending ... we were fishing at a lodge way up north, had a hard weeks fish due to cold front .. last night we fished until almost midnight ... my buddy was reeling in his line to end the trip (leeches with a sinker as we were fishing walleye) ... he felt something heavy .. figured it was a decent fish but it just seemed to glide up to the boat .. saw the head and realized it was a huge pike ... I tried to net the whole thing but underestimated the size and less than half would fit in the net ... so it flipped out and with one snap/roll it was gone ... there was dead silence for a few seconds ... then I just started saying I was sorry ... he said it was ok and then I heard the familiar "crack" of a beer ... wouldn't that have been a way to end the trip ... my buddy took it well but man I feel bad to this day ... that was a trophy.
So good on you for recognizing what you had and keeping your wits about you ... if you ever need a net man, don't call me.
