Im thinking about getting my 2.5yr old daughter out on Dog lake this weekend for some fishing.

It will be her first time fishing. so I dont expect much. Just safe ice.

There are some huts in the small bays today, but I would not try the Splake areas yet. I checked at the end of last week and the ice was way too thin for me and on my way past the access for that area today, it doesn't look like anyone has been out there yet.

Try Upper Rock Lake for some splake. We saw 7" to 8" of ice and caught three 12" to 14" splake last saturday. The lake it not known for large splake, but is known for good numbers and a better tasting fish than what Dog can give you.

Tip-up, drop me a message if you want to head out this weekend.

Good info but all the lurkers on the www won't be adding their comments about which Splake taste better....Dog, or Upper Rock.

Maybe we could use it as a code then? Tasty fish = a really good day, parasite infested fish that was cooked badly = got skunked.

But Jimmay is right the fish are better tasting in Upper Rock but not typically as big - so tasty but just slightly overcooked

Last time I fished Upper Rock I was throwing back the splake I caught, and some lad asked me what the heck I was doing. I told him I was "throwing back the small ones" and he explained that those were KEEPERS for that lake! I suppose I might keep brook trout that small if I was stream fishing, but I didn't think it was worth my time to fish for ten inch splake..........

And yes, Dog Lake splake are not the most flavourful fish I ever ate, but they are very good smoked. :D And I have also found that the ice takes its own sweet time to get thick enough out over the splake water, although it should be OK now just out from Hogan's along the east side of that island or peninsula. I have taken some nice splake there in about twenty feet of water early season other years.

We are going to hit Davies Hole this afternoon, first time for the year. It "should" have decent ice. I hope!!!!!

I'm guessing the difference in taste has to do with the differing forage types in the two lakes. Perhaps some "research", followed by a taste test is in order...

any update on Dog Lake (splake grounds) as of today? We had minus 29 this morning out on the north shore road at Loughborough, so I reckon that made a BIT of ice around here............

Saw you had posted - was hoping you went to Dog today and were going to show off some splake!!

I wonder though, with the snow, how much ice it really made?
