Hello I was reading about problem with motor and I have a question regarding one of your message? I just got my first gas motor it's a mercury 4.5 year about 80's and not to sure about this but when I use my motor should the vent on the gas tank be open or close? and also when my choke is open I have no problem as soon as I close it, it stalls or if I throlttle at low! any idea thanks......also in order to start it up I have to have the choke open 100% anr throlttle med in order for it to start. good gas good mix that part I got it right.

Acadian,
That vent should be open. It is normal to have the choke out full on a cold start-up.
With the choke open you are running a more rich mix. If it dies when you close the choke it may be starving for fuel.
I would think a carburetor re-build is in order due to the age if it has not been done recently. You might have some dirt or fuel caked up in the carb...larry
