Im thinking about purchasing a VHF radio. I like the mobilaty of a portable hand held unit. My question is, do i need a licence to own a VHF radio?

To have a VHF radio you don't need a licence. To listen to your radio you don't need a licence however if you transmit (as in operate) with your radio you do need a licence..

Viz:

The certificate required by recreational marine operators based in Canada is the Restricted Operators Certificate and is valid for the lifetime of the holder. This certificate will entitle you to operate a Marine Band radio on a volantarily fitted vessel.

I got mine thru a course with the Canadian Power & Sail Squadron, Bellville. Course was three evenings.

This is a link to a PDF that explains it in more detail:

Hope this helps.
