Snapping turtles and white bottomed fishing lures

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Snapping turtles and white bottomed fishing lures

Post by sevendustfan#1 »

Maybe a year ago i was fishing after the bridge at Petrie Island and on the downstream side i was casting a frog coloured Jitterbug and when a snapping turtle followed it maybe 4 feet away from shore. Is this normal?

Sure. I'm no expert, but I would imagine that a snapping turtle could/would snack on a frog. I'd hate to be the one that had to take the hook out though!! :?

cheers,

or maybe the snapping turtle thought it was a wild shiner baitfish or something like that

Yup see it all the time. I not sure if its as much for the food reason's as it is a teritory defence mechanism. I have had turtles chase after spoon and MEPPS this year.

I hooked in to a snapper 2 years ago on a sloooowww retrieve, my bud wanted to net but once he had the net around her and she started hissing... he let her go pretty quick   apperently snapping turtle soup is awsome :!:

years ago we had a stringer of fish tied to the end of the dock while we ate supper. Watched a snapper on the other side of the creek.
After supper we went down to clean the fish and all that was left were the heads. He snapped it right up(groan). This is the second time I have been witness to this.

Well since we're telling snapping turtle stories...

I was fishing one morning at the launch at Kars, and I noticed a bit of commotion in the long weeds at the edge of the launch...

Looked over to see a really big snapper trying to get into the water.

When I looked closer, it turned out that the snapper was tangled in somebody's discarded fishing line!!!

She was totally wrapped up in it and couldn't move...and she wasn't happy!!

So I came over and of course she's hissing and snapping at me, so I took apart one of my rods and used the thicker end to try and untangle her as best I could... got most of it off her, and she bolted for the water, only to get tangled up on some remaining longer threads. I managed to flip her over in the water with the pole and she was free...

I gathered up the remaining tangled line and bunddled it up tight and threw it out.

Just another reason NOT to just casually throw away line!! Find a garbage can, or put it in your tackle box!!!!!!!!

It's been many years, but as kids I remember my brother and I once or twice getting a turtle on the line out of Pennsylvania fishing hole. These occasions caused my Dad much grief.

We have a family joke about rescuing turtles in the road, but I got a wicked skin infection from a snapping turtle scratch on my arm once. Those back feet can reach reallllly far back. It's not just the front end ya gotta watch out for!

Good deed there on the entangled turtle, Dave. :D I'm sure in her grumpy, miserable, nasty snapping turtle way, she thanked you.

W.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
