I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help me narrow down my choices. I now have a 12 foot aluminum boat fitted with a 7.5 Evinrude that I'm looking to get a new motor for.
The boats rated for 10HP with a max weight of 500 lbs (does this include the motor?) and the transom is 16"
I don't go on very big lakes and only get out 10-20 times a year.
Should I go with a 9.9 or something smaller? Would a 9.9 4 stroke exceed the boats rating because of it's extra weight??
Long or short shaft? What size transom do most lighter 14' boats have ( on the off chance I upgrade to 14')?
I'm leaning towards either a Honda/Yamaha or Mercury but I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance

I just got a Honda 20hp 4 stroke - long shaft on the back of a 14'. The same boat comes in two different transoms so you have to match the motor accordingly.
You should have a short shaft for your 12' - 16" transom. The weight on the 9.9 (manual/short) is only 92 lbs (not too bad).
Here are the specs for the 9.9
