Upgrading to 24v

Post by swampbuster »

I finally ordered a 24v trolling motor, no more getting blown around on windy days, well not as much anyway. I have a 12v system now with the three prong plug that came with the boat. As I understand it I run the pos+ of 1st batt to the troll motor and the neg - of the 1st batt to the pos of the 2nd batt. then the neg of the second batt to the troll motor? The third prong in my troll motor plug will remain not in use as it is now? Thanks for any advice.

Just done this myself. You have it right. 24v from 2 batteries in series. How you use the existing plug is up to you - as long as you don't try to plug another motor into it. There is a 4 pin plug commonly used on boats that can give any combination of 12/24/36 if you wanted to make it standard for any motor. Up to you. What motor did you get, I just fitted a MK 80lb PDAPU to my 17' Princecraft - great in wind and current.

Thanks for the response Ady, I got a MK 80 PD US 54" for my 17' Lund. The 55 12v just did not do it on heavy days. I get it in about 2 weeks , cant wait to try it.

Thanks Russ

SwampBuster,

I am interested in how that motor runs on the lakes in your area, I am planning a fishing trip to the Battersea area for next spring and it looks like I will be runing an electric motor.

Any tips you have after using it for awhile would be greatly apreciated.

I am waiting for Minn Kota to ship the new Terrova 101lbs 36volt. The new units have the autopilot on the foot control and also has heel to toe steering. The new internal universal sonar also has temp.
