Any Interests in a 2009 Fly-in Trip for Trout???

Lookin' at doing a fly-in trip next year up North to an Ontario Trout lake that has natural producing Lakers, Rainbows and Specks all within the same body of water

It's ~ 8hrs from Ottawa and then a 25min excursion via floatplane....we will be staying at a lodge that has house keeping cabins, boats, motors, canoes, etc....and offers an American plan if desired...

Cost for the cabin, boat, motor and float plane (7day trip) including taxes is ~ $1200/person... food and travel (gas) from Ottawa to destination is extra...total for trip should be less than $1500/person....if there's a good interest, I may be able to negotiate a deal with the lodge owner and aviation company...

I did a fly in trip last spring to a reproducing speckle lake with a splake and a laker + speckle lake adjacent. Four of us went in at a cost of about 650$/person + food and travel to get there. With weight limitations we left a lot of food and beer behind, as well as our tunage, warm clothes, etc...but we felt like we had enough for 4 days. We expected huge things and easy fishing but in the end we ran out of food, beer, were stranded for 30 h because of bad weather and we were only able to land 8 fish in 5 days. With only 2 bites in the lake we flew into, we were chased down to the laker and speckle lake 1.5 km S to which we carried boat and motors down to. We managed one 1.5 lb lake trout and 5 speckles less than a lb. From the main lake one lucky guy got 2 bites (nobody else had one in 3 days) and they turned into a 3.9 and a 4.2 lb speckle. He seemed happy. I recall the snow in June coming in sideways and stinging my face while wishing for our jackets and gloves that were left behing and for a bite because we were out of food, wondering when the plane would come to get us and falling asleep to no lights (ran out of propane) and each guy getting a tablespoon of left over peanut butter (left from previous campers) for dinner.

1 Lesson, reserve a satellite radio when you book your trip so you can communicate with base camp.

...Doesn't sound like a very good trip

This lodge has 8 cabins, saunas, dining area and main radio base to the avaition co. in case of emergency....

So you guys paid $650 for 4 days (+ your food and travel) and left alot of gear behind

....not my idea of a fun filled planned fly-in trip!!!....that works out to $163/day/person as opposed to $171/day person with this offer and unlimited gear to bring up with you....

The DeHavilland Beaver, carries maximum of 1100 lbs. Your weight and gear can't exceed 1100 lbs. per flight. ...so that would mean that 4 guys at ~ 200lbs each = 800lbs ...that only leaves 300lbs of gear left which equates to 75lbs/person.....I'll be bringin 75lbs worth of beer in let alone my clothes, equipment, fishing gear (downriggers, cannonballs, fly rods, tackle boxes) food, coolers, ice, etc....

The cost I qouted above is for 2 persons/flight for 7 days!!!....If I'm going to plan a trip like this and invest that kind of money, I'm not gonna leave gear behind to save a few bucks!!!

I went into this lake with a couple of buddies for a few hours last August...1:30 in the afternoon till 4:00...we caught 6 Lakers and 3 rainbows during this time on a sunny 32C hot "dog days of August" afternoon....that's what makes me want to go back!!!,,,biggest Laker so far this year is 22lbs...rainbow is 7lbs and 6lb speck...

There's also another lake filled with naturally producing rainbows and Lakers which is a 15 min portage through the bush across the lake from the main camp....there are 2 boats on that lake each equipped with gas motors which is included in the cost of the trip!!!

...the only lugging of stuff to this remote lake is your fishin' gear, food and beverages for the day

Yeah... TMH is kind of like me... we both live on the Ottawa... many consider it to be one of the best fisheries in the world yet we both ( I gather from TMH's posts) would rather fish other waters. The Ottawa is actually hard to fish even though may record fish come from there.

I was on the Nipigon River yesterday and fished for 5 hours. we put 10 fish in the boat 6 Lakers 4lbs to 12lbs and four Brookies 2.5lbs to 4lbs. The average Laker on Lake Nipigon is 14lbs and a Brookie has to be 22 inches or bigger to keep one. Giddy up!!!!!!

The guys I went with on the trip typically go to TB for specks and they do quite well but they said they just do trial and error there so I dont know if they were even getting to the best fishing holes. We've been trying to organize renting an ice shack on Nipigon for the past few years but it's never materialized.

Didnt mean to rain on your parade with the fly-in trip, Trust me, I wouldnt have changed anything about the trip, if we would have been catching fish then I would have loved to stay. The camp was awesome, lots of gas, I coulda lived there for months. If you've caught fish there already, I'd imagine it'd be quite worth it. That lake that we flew into, we also ran into other people on another lake (which was fairly dissapointing) and there were quad trails into all the lakes.....sooo much for remote fishing.
