Setting up a Kayak for fishing

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Setting up a Kayak for fishing

Post by Jimmy_1 »

I have a red Walden Paddler Cayak. More of a canoe style for sitting. I have 2 removebale seats in it.

My question is apart from my portable F-F is there anything else I would need to rig it up? Small anchor, rod holder etc?

I assume from seeing the kayaks for sale at Baitcasters and other stores that majority of them do not come already "fully" rigged like the pics of some on here.

Any advice?Info?

Thanks!

A (recessed) Scotty rod holder in front of you will help big time when trolling. You have to see te tip to know what's happening. The rear monts are for ocean and big fish. Get the qwick draw rod holder, not the tube one.

If you mount an anchor, mount in in the stern(with some pulley): fishing with the wind in your face sux. Don't anchor in fast moving water. If somnething big enough flows downstream and catches your line, it will pull you down or tip you.

FF is not a necessity unless you fish deeper water and/or want to jig for walleye

A paddle leash is essential. A rod leash will also help :-)

Make sure you install something so you can clip your paddle leash and also your stringer if you want to keep fish.

Get a lip grip. A landing net is cumbersome

You will keep the tip of the rod up to bring the fish near the kayak. Ocassinaly you will also dunk the reel. Keep in mind they will get a lot of abuse.

Otherwise Kayak and canoe fishing is super fun and productive
